Vulnerable Children
YUVA (Youths Union for Voluntary Action) is deeply committed to addressing the needs of children, adolescents, and youth, who are pivotal to the organization’s vision of driving societal progress through their energy, creativity, and innovation. Recognizing the challenges faced by children in Naxal-affected areas of Jharkhand, YUVA has undertaken targeted interventions to support their development and well-being.
Identifying Challenges
YUVA’s formative studies in Jharkhand revealed that many children are:
- Living and working in difficult circumstances, deprived of basic necessities such as education, healthcare, nutrition, clean water, and sanitation.
- Engaged in hazardous and illegal activities, such as coal picking and theft from coal mines in the Ramgarh district.
- Facing mental and physical challenges, with families often unequipped to provide adequate care or access necessary resources.
Key Interventions
1. DISHA Education Center
- Objective:
- To provide an innovative, integrated approach to education and health for children living in marginalized and high-risk environments, specifically in coal-mining areas.
- Model:
- Offers a blend of education, healthcare, and community engagement to motivate families and children to transition into the formal education system.
- Acts as a prototype model for advocacy and replication in similar areas.
2. Working with Families:
- Establishes rapport and collaborates with families of vulnerable children to address issues such as:
- Poverty-induced dependence on child labor.
- Lack of awareness about education and health resources.
- Supports families with children who have mental or physical disabilities by providing access to healthcare and specialized support systems.
Vision for Change
YUVA’s efforts aim to:
- Empower Children:
- Equip children with education, skills, and health interventions to enable their holistic development.
- Integrate Communities:
- Mainstream vulnerable children into formal systems of education and healthcare.
- Advocate for Replication:
- Demonstrate the success of the DISHA Education Center model to inspire similar initiatives in other coal-mining and high-risk areas.
Through these focused interventions, YUVA strives to create pathways for vulnerable children to escape cycles of poverty, labor, and neglect, offering them opportunities for a brighter future. By addressing the root causes of their challenges and fostering systemic change, YUVA aims to transform these children's lives and, by extension, the communities they belong to.
